Wapakoneta's Warner, Kantner earn district honors

From staff reports

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Sara Warner and varsity coach Ross Kantner each were honored by the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, as the NWOSSCA released its annual all-district awards and scholarship winners Thursday.

Warner earned a spot on the district’s first team in Division II for her performance during the 2013 season.

She was one of six players from Western Buckeye League schools to be a first-team selection in Division II.

Warner was named a first-team All-WBL selection last month.

Kantner received the Kim Mahoney Award, the district announced Thursday.

The award is “given in honor of the past Ohio High School Athletic Association Assistant Commissioner Kim Mahoney, to the coach of a high school girls soccer team who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship, integrity, the development of charter and positive values on the field,” the association wrote in a press release.

After a misunderstanding during the nomination process, players on the Wapakoneta boys team ultimately were not nominated for the Division II all-district teams.

Members of other area schools were honored by the district:

St. Marys boys varsity coach Dave Ring was named the Division II Coach of the Year, while St. Marys’ Steve Brown was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

Celina’s Calvin Freeman, coach of the WBL girls champion, was the Division II Coach of the Year.

The association also announced Thursday it will hold the 11th Annual Senior All-District games on Sunday, Nov. 10 at Findlay High School’s Graham Field.

Seniors selected to 2013 all-district teams will play in these annual season-ending matches.

The girls match will begin at noon Sunday, while the boys match will be at 2 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.
