Wapakoneta opened its regular season Tuesday with a 53-45 loss to visiting St. Henry in nonleague girls basketball play.
The game was close throughout, with St. Henry up early, and the teams separated by just one point at both halftime and the end of the third quarter. St. Henry used a surge in the final period to claim the win.
"We have some room for improvement," said Wapakoneta coach Rusty Allen. "We just didn't take care of the ball."
He noted that with St. Henry outrebounding Wapakoneta, and also winning the turnover battle, "it makes it difficult to win."
He praised the team's effort, especially sophomore Alyssa Good and freshman Addy Allen, as well as senior Audra Schaub for a good job at point guard.
Jessica Davis led Wapakoneta with 12 points, while Makenzie Wilson had eight. Schaub and Katie Engle each scored seven.
For St. Henry, Alayna Ahlers, Danielle Lange and Allison Siefring each had 10 points.
