The "second season" offers a second chance.
Wapakoneta put forth a solid effort on both ends of the court as they defeated Van Wert 40-36 in a Division II sectional tournament contest on Wednesday.
The Redskins had lost to Van Wert by a wide margin when they met two months ago near the end of December, and closed the regular season on a three-game losing streak.
None of that mattered this time around.
Wapakoneta played even through the first quarter, then built a small lead at the half. They protected that until early the fourth quarter. Van Wert made a run and tied the game with 3 1/2 minutes to play.
Garrett Siefring scored to put the Redskins back in front, and the final few possessions went the way of the Redskins, with free throws by Noah Ambos sealing the win.
Wapakoneta, now 8-15 on the year, advances to Friday's sectional final where they will meet third seed Defiance. Those two met on Valentine's Day with Wapakoneta winning 42-38.
Offensively, the Redskins were led by Siefring with 15 points and Ambos with 13.
