FINDLAY — "Once bitten, twice shy."
For the Wapakoneta boys basketball team, a second bite proved just as painful, if not more as they fell to Defiance 42-35 in a Division II sectional final on Friday night.
The Bulldogs had won the regular season meeting on their home floor. On Friday, they got in front early. They were up by eight with four minutes left in the half, then had a burst to extend it to nearly 20 at the break.
Wapakoneta's defense clamped down in the second half, allowing just 13 points total. The offense fought its way back, getting within two points with just over a minute to go.
But a couple missed shots by Wapakoneta and a few free throws for Defiance would ensure that the Bulldogs' year went on and the Redskins' season came to an end.
Wapakoneta's 2018-19 campaign finishes with a record of 14-10.
