Siblings celebrate together

327 years of wisdom and experience, or at least that’s how Lyn Hemmelgarn puts it. Hemmelgarn, one of four siblings who gathered at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta on Friday night, helped his brother and sister, Kenny Hemmelgarn and Doris Makley celebrate their 84th and 80th birthdays.

Lyn Hemmelgarn is 81, and his sister, Alice Propst-Kill, is 82.

The group, even in their later years, are still incredibly close. Lyn and Makley attribute that to their upbringing.

“Growing up on the farm is the only way to grow up,” Lyn Hemmelgarn said. “You learn how to work, you learn how to appreciate life a whole lot when you work together.”

“We always worked together as a family,” Makely added.

That togetherness, which lasts until this very day, sent them all on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska.

The four siblings, without spouses or any other family members, made the trek in 2006.
