Saluting servicemen

Three generations of soldiers sat around a table together sharing their memories Saturday night.
They didn’t serve in the same branch of the U.S. military and two of them didn’t know each other before the night began, but their service to their country made them brothers.
Volunteers from Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8445, the post’s men’s and women’s auxiliaries and community donors helped bring 175 veterans and their guests together for a special dinner and evening in their honor at the VFW.
It had been years since such a dinner was held and organizers said it was time to bring the veterans all together before any more were lost.
There were salutes, hands over hearts during patriotic songs, clapping along with the songs of each branch of service, camaraderie between veterans who didn’t know each other before that night but felt a close kinship, and tears and a standing ovation for the playing of “Taps” in memory of fallen comrades.
