Redskins fall to Van Wert in sectional baseball final

VAN WERT — This year, the ride was a little shorter.
Wapakoneta battled but came up short on Saturday, losing 7-4 to top seed Van Wert in a Division II sectional baseball final.
The Cougars, now 22-2 on the year, built up a lead over the middle innings. The Redskins managed to get to the relief pitcher, where they did some damage.
Wapakoneta finishes with a record of 12-11 on the 2019 season.
Tim Bruns started and took the loss for Wapakoneta. He threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Braeden Goulet came on for the other 2 1/3. He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks.
For Van Wert, Lawson Blackmore pitched 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits. He walked four and hit two batters. He recorded 11 strikeouts. Owen Treece closed out with 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with one strikeout.
Coach Jason Brandt praised his team's effort. "The kids battled the whole game," he said. "We had some opportunities. We did a good job when given the chance. Top to bottom, I can't be more proud of their effort."
Looking back at the season overall, Brandt said, "We made some big strides. Our pitchers were really good. Our defense was good at times. We competed on a daily basis."
