Members of the Wapakoneta Redskins' boys swimming team automatically qualified to the state meet in four events Friday, while others await their fate as other district meets conclude around the state.

In order to automatically qualify to state, swimmers had to finish first or second in their respective events. In addition to all of the automatic qualifiers in Ohio, the 16 best remaining entries in each event will earn at-large berths to the state meet.

As the Redskins competed Friday at Bowling Green State University, a pair of boys, Charlie Sutton and Michael Johnston, each won two individual events Friday in a Division II district meet. Sutton was the winner of the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races, while Johnston was first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.

Wapakoneta's 200 medley relay team — Johnston, Sutton, Joey Metzger and Ryan Schneider — finished second to earn a state berth, while the Redskins' 400 freestyle relay quartet of Johnston, Michael Zwez, Metzger and Sutton also qualified by finishing second.

The Redskins' girls program did not have any automatic qualifiers. They will hope to secure at-large berths, which will be announced Sunday.
