A Wapakoneta senior broke the cap on the hoop and a junior teammate tickled the twine for 12 points in a decisive second quarter to lead the Lady Redskins as they hoisted the championship trophy in the sixth annual TSC Holiday Tournament.
The Redskins used a 32-4 run from early in the second quarter until just eight seconds left in the third to throttle the Cincinnati Hughes Big Red, 56-27, in the championship game Saturday afternoon at Wapakoneta.
With 6:52 left in the second quarter and trailing 11-3, Wapakoneta freshman guard Addy Allen missed a shot from behind the arc on the left side, but senior guard Jessica Davis cleaned up the miss on the backside and scored with a putback off the glass. It was the first basket by the Redskins since scoring 12 seconds into the contest.
Lady Redskins coach Rusty Allen admitted Davis’ shot proved to be pivotal.
“That was a key bucket for us. We were getting those shots around the paint but they just were just not falling,” said Allen of the senior who ended with 4 points, four rebounds and two steals. “Jess got that rebound and calmly put it back up and didn’t rush it. It put an ease to everybody and they realized the ball will still go in.”
