In October 2016, Josh and Shannon Knouff tied the knot with dreams of starting a family, and those dreams came true at 4:24 p.m. Monday when they welcomed Elijah John Knouff into the world at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.

The St. Henry couple’s firstborn was also the first newborn of the new year at JTDMH, a special surprise of which Shannon Knouff never dreamed. The new mother told The Evening Leader her son’s due date had been Dec. 29.

“He had to make a special appearance; people kept saying that, but I didn’t really think we were going to go over — I thought we would go before my due date,” she said. “It was a surprise to me, but everyone else — (especially) his grandparents — thought maybe he was just waiting.”

It was about an hour after the ball dropped the couple realized it was time and rushed to JTDMH, Shannon Knouff said.

“We came in on New Year’s morning — it was about 1:30 when we first got here — and Josh asked if anyone else was in labor,” she said. “They said, ‘No, if you deliver, you’re going to be our New Year’s baby.’”

As thrilling as it was to have the first newborn...
