WHS students aim for healthier lifestyles

January 23, 2014

Wapakoneta High School students are gearing up for a healthy and fit new year with the Redskin Health Challenge.

While setting fitness and diet challenges, students will be working together after school on a weekly basis to meet their goals.

Guidance counselor DeLynn Epperly told interested students that they will be setting individual goals to accomplish throughout the next 10 weeks.

“You have to figure out what your goals are,” Epperly said. “It might just be education — getting to know what I need to be doing on a daily or weekly basis. You do feel better when you clean your diets up.”

As an added incentive to accomplish those goals, students will give $5 at the beginning of the 10 weeks.

“Let’s say your goal is weight loss. If you lose 5 percent of your body weight at the end you get all of your money back,” Epperly said.

“If your goal is to really become healthier, then you guys will look at the incentives. If you guys can take these and do 10 faithfully and with success, you’ll get your money back. I think if you put money into something and you pay for it, it provides a little bit more incentive for success.”

Epperly said any funds not given back to students will be given to charity or a school organization.

Students will meet every Tuesday from 3:15 to 4 p.m. after school. After students have a chance to meet individually, they will meet as a group to speak about goals and plans. The last 30 minutes will be dedicated to getting students moving and active.

Initially, the group will be walking and running around the school. A yoga lesson is being planned for later in the year.
