FINDLAY — The Wapakoneta varsity wrestling team finished in second place out of 12 at the Findlay duals Saturday to start its season.
The team went 4-1 in its duals, beating Fostoria, Shawnee, Napoleon and Hicksville.
The lone loss was to eventual winner, Dayton Eaton.
Head coach Jason Rostorfer was pleased with the team’s first match of the year.
“Overall I am pleased with the results,” Rostorfer said. “As in any sport, the first competition of a season brings many question marks. Until they get out there and compete, you never know what to expect.”
Rostorfer said he was impressed with a couple freshman wrestlers who were wrestling for the first time at the high school level Saturday.
“I am excited for some freshmen who got their first experience at the varsity level,” Rostorfer said. “While they will take some lumps at times this season, they are gaining invaluable experience. It will only make them better.”
But Rostorfer said the experience and the heart of this team is in the senior class.
“On the other side of the coin, we also had three seniors that have been wrestling varsity since their freshman seasons,” Rostorfer said. “They each have over 100 matches worth of experience and it showed. John Martin, Nate Valentine, and Alec Brown led the team with a record of 11-1. They have been good leaders for the remainder of the team.”
After finishing second at the duals, Rostorfer said the focus now shifts to the Western Buckeye League.
“We now have to get back to practice and prepare for the WBL opener this Thursday,” Rostorfer said. “I have a long list of things we better improve on by Thursday and that is our focus.”
