Wapakoneta trio earns All-Ohio honors

December 4, 2013

From staff reports

Three members of the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team were named All-Ohio for the 2013 season, as the Division III and Division IV teams were announced Tuesday.

Wapakoneta senior Kyle Gonterman was a second-team all-state choice on the offensive line.

Gonterman was named the Western Buckeye League’s Offensive Lineman of the Year last month. He helped guide the Redskins’ offense to a school-record 39.4 points per game in the 2013 season.

Redskins senior Zach Schmerge was a third-team All-Ohioan at the running back position.

Schmerge was previously named the WBL Offensive Back of the Year.

With 1,389 yards this season, Schmerge ran for the fourth-most yards in school history.

Wapakoneta junior Thomas Schoenlein was a special mention selection.

From his defensive end position, Schoenlein recorded 20 tackles for loss and eight sacks in 2013.

All three players were previously first-team All-WBL and first-team All-Northwest District selections for this season.

This was the first all-state selection for all three Redskins.

St. Marys senior Jared Knous was a special mention choice in Division III.
