The Wapakoneta Redskins placed fifth overall in the Western Buckeye League boys golf tournament Friday at Shawnee Country Club in Lima.
With its fifth-place effort, combined with its second-place during the regular season in match play, Wapak finished fourth overall in the final WBL standings for the 2013 season.
“Coming into the season, I thought we would finish in the middle of the pack,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “We had a really good showing in the regular season by finishing 7-2, and I thought that can propel us to a top-three finish. However, St. Marys creeped up on us and beat us out of fourth place in the tournament and, ultimately, bumped us out of third place.
“All in all, I thought we exceeded our expectations by finishing undefeated at home and a 2-2 on the road,” he said. “I just thought we would have a better showing at the WBL tournament. Again, we had players playing in the WBL tournament for the first time in their career and it showed based on their scores.”
Drew Wayman led Wapak with a 78 on Friday, tying him for fifth place as an individual.
“Drew played calm and steady throughout the round,” Kenny Wayman said. “He did not press and tried to be too aggressive with his shots. He kept the ball in the fairway and he took what the course was giving him on each hole.
“He shot a 41 front and came back with a 37 back,” he said. “I would say Drew’s finish was not bad at all out of 60 golfers.”
Wapak senior Bobby Crow shot an 83 on Friday to finish 15th overall in the tournament.
“Bobby had a little bit of a rough start on the front by shooting a 46,” Wayman said. “However, he came back strong by shooting a 37 with an eagle on a par 5, hole No. 16.
“Bobby had a great senior year this year and he will be missed greatly next year,” he said.
Wayman and Crow each earned first-team All-WBL honors for finished in the top 12 for the league’s combined match and tournament points standings. Wayman was third, while Crow was fourth.
Alex Gossard shot a 95 for Wapak on Friday.
Gossard earned honorable mention All-WBL for the season.
Ryan Hunlock posted Wapak’s fourth score Friday with a 98.
Dan Bogan carded a 100, while Nick Bruns shot a 107 for the Redskins.
Bath was the WBL champion for 2013, sweeping both the regular season at 9-0 in match play and winning Friday’s tournament.
St. Marys’ Carter Bowman was the league champion with an even-par 72.
Celina, which tied Wapak for second place during the regular season, claimed the runner-up spot both in Friday’s tournament and in the final standings for the 2013 season.
