The Wapakoneta Redskins had a new lowest scorer Monday as senior Zoe Rayburn led the team with a 47 in their 199-201 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in varsity girls golf action at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
“Zoe had a very good round tonight,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Monday. “She had one tough hole. Otherwise, she would have been mid-40s.
"She hit the ball very well tonight and putted excellent with only 16 putts,” she said. “Our goal is 15 putts or less per round. When we do that we score well. She was right on line with that.”
Fellow senior Shelby Kohler, who shot a 48, had led Wapak in every match and tournament entering Monday.
Sierra Sammons and Emily Klopfenstein each had a 52 to complete Wapak’s scoring four totals.
“It was also nice to see Sierra and Emily bounce back after not so smooth rounds last time at home,” West said. “They both hit the ball pretty good tonight and made some better course management choices.
“Sierra putted better,” she said. “Emily hit the ball better but struggled with the putter. Some rounds are just like that.”
Defiance’s Marrisa Berringer was Monday’s match medalist with a 42.
“Defiance is a good team,” West said Monday. “We knew that this would be a great match tonight. Usually the Wapakoneta Country Club is an advantage to us but they play a golf course very similar to it so they felt at home as well.
“We did a great job of matching them all night. When one of our girls struggled in the group, her teammate picked her up and matched the Defiance girl score for score. We are becoming a very balanced golf team, which is key to being successful. Anytime we shoot under 200 at home, we’ve got a great chance at winning the match.”
The win put Wapak at 6-2 overall and was the team’s third straight in match play.
“I really like where we are right now as a team,” West said. “We are building confidence each time we step out, starting to fine tune some key details in our golf games and starting to peak at the right time.”
Wapak, after its two-stroke win Monday, has won its last two matches by a combined three strokes.
