The Wapakoneta Redskins blanked the Bellefontaine Chieftains, 5-0, in their first match of the season Tuesday in varsity girls tennis play. Bellefontaine brought only five players to the match at the Wapakoneta Rotary Club courts at Wapakoneta High School.

The Redskins lost only one game Tuesday.

“It was a good start,” Wapak varsity coach Mike Klock said. “They’re a weak team. I expect our competition to be much stiffer as the season goes on.”

In the first singles match, Wapakoneta’s Kaitlin Snider beat Bellefontaine’s Kiersten Daum, 6-0, 6-0.

Playing in her first varsity match, Wapak freshman Allie Zofkie handled Kenzie Collinsworth, 6-1, 6-0, in the second singles match.

“Allie did well, and she’s got some work to do yet,” Klock said. “She has to keep building as the season goes and be ready for the tougher (Western Buckeye League) teams.”

At third singles, Wapak’s Rachel Roberts disposed of Hannah Weimer, 6-0, 6-0.

Wapak’s Kiersten Wellons and Chelsea Myers shut out Hannah Vance and Traysa Downing, 6-0, 6-0.

Bellefontaine forfeited the second doubles match, as Wapakoneta had Carly Buzzard and MacKenzie Kaverman slated to play.

The Redskins moved to 1-0 overall with Tuesday’s win.

Wapakoneta will visit Lima Senior at 4 p.m. Friday in a non-league match at the Collett Street Courts in Lima.
