The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their 2013 season with a sixth-place finish out of 18 teams Monday in the Homan Invitational at Piqua Country Club in Piqua.
The Redskins totaled 349 strokes as a team.
Drew Wayman led Wapak with an 80 for 18 holes.
“Drew played steady throughout the round, as he recorded 10 pars and eight bogeys,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “He hit the ball well, but the greens were the culprit for a really good round.”
Elsewhere for the Redskins, Bobby Crow added an 84, Nick Bruns shot an 87 and Ryan Hunlock posted a 98 to finish the scoring.
“Bobby started the round 6-over-par after three holes. However, he came back and shot only 6-over-par for the remaining 15 holes,” Wayman said. “This was Nick’s first varsity tournament and I thought he played extremely well under that situation.”
Wayman evaluated his team’s performance in its entirety Monday.
“Overall, I thought we played well, considering it was the first tournament of the year. We have little varsity experience coming back from last year and I thought we handled ourselves exceptionally well,” Wayman said. “This was a good tournament to get our feet wet, and hopefully we will just get better throughout this week’s tournaments.”
Wapak will resume its schedule beginning at 8:30 a.m. today at the Cardinal Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Course in Minster.
Tecumseh was the team champion in Monday’s tournament, totaling 308 shots, led by medalist Connor Estes’ 72.
