Wapak man dies in crash
A 43-year-old Wapakoneta man died from injuries suffered in a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of Ohio 501 and Wapakoneta-Buckland Road, north of Wapakoneta.
Ronald Harruff was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag after the three-car crash at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Harruff was traveling north on Ohio 501 and slowing to make a left turn onto Wapakoneta-Buckland Road when his 1996 Ford Taurus was struck from behind by a 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck being driven by William Walter, 59, of Lima. The force from the initial crash forced Harruff’s vehicle into the northbound lane of Ohio 501 where his car was struck again by a 2008 Honda CR-V, being driven by Dana Ridenour, 33, of Wapakoneta, according to troopers’ reports from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
A passenger in Harruff’s car, Martha Schroer, 50, of Wapakoneta, was transported to St. Rita’s Medical Center, in Lima, with serious injuries. She is listed in critical condition at the hospital.
Walter and Ridenour both received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
No charges have been filed at this point, OSHP Wapakoneta Post Sgt. Brian Jordan said this morning. Information was not available on seatbelt usage but alcohol was not thought to be a factor in the crashes.
Assisting at the scene was the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, and Cridersville and Wapakoneta fire departments.
Traffic was stopped north of the scene and at Linzee Road to the south, forcing motorists to use alternate routes.
OSHP Wapakoneta Post Commander Lt. Scott Carrico said the crash remains under investigation.
This is the third fatal vehicular crash in Auglaize County this year.
