The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team began its 2013 regular season Thursday with a 162-189 loss to the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets, in non-league dual match played at White Pines Golf Course in Swanton.

Perrysburg’s Monica Dorner was the match medalist with a nine-hole score of 37.

Shelby Kohler paced Wapak with a 42.

Completing the top four scoring totals for the Redskins were Zoe Rayburn (48), Haley Kinstle (49) and Sierra Sammons (50).

“Today was a very good round for us,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Thursday. “It’s probably one of the best starts we’ve had in five years.

“I was very pleased with how they played,” she said. “We’re still working out the kinks after not having played consistently throughout the summer.”

Also for the Yellow Jackets, tying at 41 were Katie Diehl and Macy Tudor, while Madison Williams added a 43.

The loss moved Wapak to 0-1 overall this season.

The Redskins will compete in their first tournament of the season starting at 8:30 a.m. today, in the Celina Invitational at Fox’s Den Golf Course in Celina.
