The Wapakoneta Redskins opened Western Buckeye League play with a 167-181 win over the Kenton Wildcats on Monday in a varsity boys golf match at the Wapakoneta Country Club, in Wapak’s home opener for the 2013 season.

Wapak junior Drew Wayman was the match medalist Monday with a 1-under-par round of 35 for nine holes.

“Once again, Drew played extremely well to earn medalist honors,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “He had only 12 putts for the nine holes. He read the greens really well and hit the ball solid the entire round.”

Bobby Crow shot a 40 to finish second for Wapak.

“Bobby had one bad hole where he had a three-putt double bogey,” Wayman said. “Although Bobby had one bad hole, he hit the ball solid all day.”

Nick Bruns (45) and Ryan Hunlock (47) completed the Redskins’ top four scores. Kenton was grouped in the 40s, led by Anthony KcKee with a 43. Luke Nichols (44), Britton Hensel (46) and Damon Rall (48) completed Kenton’s scoring.

Wayman explained the benefit of playing at home Monday.

“It's always an advantage playing at home. Today, we took advantage of the tough pin placements and fast greens,” Wayman said Monday. “The conditions were very good to us, and we took full advantage of the difficult pin placements.

“We just need to fine-tune our short game and limit those bad holes to bogeys,” he said. “Once we do that, we should be just fine.”

Monday was Wapak’s first match of the season, so the win gave the team a 1-0 overall record and 1-0 WBL on the season. Kenton dropped to 0-1 overall.

The Redskins will resume their season today with a non-league home match at 2 p.m. against Greenville.
