The Wapakoneta Redskins clinched a share of the regular season Western Buckeye League title Thursday.
Wapak, with a 5-0 win Thursday over the St. Marys Roughriders, improved to 8-0 in the WBL through eight matches with one to play.
The Redskins will face Van Wert on Monday in its league finale.
A win by Wapak against Van Wert would clinch the league’s regular season title outright and would give Wapak 10 points for first place entering the WBL tournament.
Shawnee, which trails Wapak by one loss in the league standings, can forge a first-place tie with a win over Defiance on Monday combined with a Wapak loss to Van Wert.
“The girls have played very well this season,” Wapak varsity coach Mike Klock said. “I think we’re in great shape. If we finish third in the WBL tournament, we could get beat out for the league title, but we’ll probably have four No. 1 seeds out of the five. That’ll be a great advantage.”
The Redskins cruised to five two-set wins Thursday against St. Marys.
Kaitlin Snider beat Anna Ernst, 6-1, 6-0, in first singles. Allie Zofkie downed Abby Wilker, 6-1, 6-1, in second singles. Rachel Roberts blanked Shaylin Kiehl, 6-0, 6-0, in third singles.
At first doubles, Kierston Wellons and Chelsea Myers were victorious over Jennifer Lauth and Bailey Rust, 6-2, 6-0. At second doubles, Carly Buzzard and Mackenzie Kaverman handled Jenna Perry and Hannah Felver, 6-0, 6-2.
The Redskins are now 11-0 overall.
