The Wapakoneta Redskins ACME team fell to the Napoleon Wildcats Tuesday night, 5–4, ending their run at an ACME state championship.
Behind head coach Willie Sammetinger, Wapak finished 1–2 in the state tournament, and a record of 23–4 on the season.
“It was a fun season, the guys worked really hard,” said assistant coach Nick Sammetinger. “They had a pretty good year of baseball, if you look at spring and summer, they went 48-10. It’s one last summer that all the guys are going to play together before they go off on their own.”
In the double-elimination tournament held in Bryan, the Redskins lost their first game of the tournament to the 2009 ACME champions, Defiance, and would have to work their way through the losers’ bracket.
Wapak then took on Springfield, and behind the arms of Marshall Gerlach and Keaton Zwiebel -— and a little help from 14 total hits — easily defeated Springfield, 12–3.
Napoleon also split their weekend series, beating host team Bryan, 10–4, and then losing Sunday to Northmont, 11–4.View more articles in:
