KENTON — A fast-paced, energized start by the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers helped them cruise to a 70-27 win Tuesday over the Ridgemont Golden Gophers in a Division IV girls basketball sectional semifinal at Kenton High School.
In a matchup of two Northwest Central Conference teams, the Tigers shot out to a 21-1 lead after the first period, as Kenzie Jarnagin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for her seventh point in the opening period.
“In a game like this you want to come out and get a big start,” W-G varsity coach Doug Foley said. “That’s the reason why, as the No. 2 seed, we wanted to play right off the bat.”
In the second period, the Tigers continued to pressure Ridgemont and force turnovers.
W-G continued its run throughout the period as Emily Patton scored seven points, including a 4 of 4 effort from the charity stripe.
Jarnagin added another seven points in a 32-1 run the Tigers posted throughout the first period-and-a-half.
The Golden Gophers finally hit their first field goal at the 3:47 mark in the second stanza, while W-G mounted a 45-10 advantage at halftime.
The third period started with the Tigers continuing their offensive stretch.
Patton led the way with nine points, going 5 for 6 from the free throw line as she drew several Ridgemont fouls. Chelsea Spencer and Sydney Buffenbarger each added a 3-pointer to the Tigers’ effort, helping them to a 62-17 lead.
Patton led all scorers with 21 points, while Jarnagin added 16 for the Tigers, including 14 in the first half.
Spencer posted 10 points in the victory.
Keysten Creamer led Ridgemont with 11 points.
The Tigers will play the third-seeded Ada Bulldogs for their next tournament game.
The two teams were scheduled to play a regular season game Jan. 25 but it was postponed and never rescheduled.
“We did not get to play them [Ada],” said Foley. “It’s going to be a tough matchup for us with physicality. It’s going to be a tough game.”
W-G and Ada will play at 8 p.m. Saturday in a Division IV sectional semifinal.
The winner will advance to a Division IV tournament at Wapakoneta High School starting Feb. 27.
The victor between W-G and Ada will face the winner of New Knoxville and Fort Recovery, who will play at 6:15 p.m. Saturday before the Tigers and Bulldogs tip off.View more articles in:
