The Republican primary for the Ohio House of Representatives will take place May 6, pitting an incumbent with 18 years of government experience against a Wapakoneta resident who is competing in his first election.
Incumbent Tony Burkley, R-Payne, and newcomer Brett Eley, R-Wapakoneta, will face off in the battle for state representative of the 82nd Ohio House District, which includes Defiance, Paulding and Van Wert Counties, as well as portions of Auglaize County that includes all of Wapakoneta.
Burkley was elected as state representative in 2012, and is running for his second term. Prior to his service in state government, Burkley served 16 years as Paulding County Commissioner.
“One of the things that really helped me out when I was commissioner was that it prepared me for some of the things that Columbus tends to mandate on local communities,” Burkley said. “Being a commissioner really helped me when it came to having a view of how locals are impacted by state decisions.”
The 27-year-old Eley said that although he has never served in government before, his youth and his education at Ohio University sets him apart from Burkley.
“I might seem young, but I feel like I’ve experienced a lot in life, and those experiences have prepared me for this position,” Eley said.
