Tutoring to help students

October 18, 2013

Seventh grade tutor Brooke Mullen, 13, drills fifth grade student Zackery Shreves, 11, on his vocabulary words during the fifth grade tutoring program.

Many students struggle to find help outside of the classroom for homework, tests and everyday studying. For Wapakoneta Middle School fifth-graders, they should look no further than their own school.
Seventh-grade tutor Brooke Mullen, 13, said she chose to help fifth-graders because she wants to use her gifts to help others.
She said school is easy for her, but she understands that many students do not learn as quickly. She said her favorite subject is math, which is the subject she enjoys tutoring the most.
“I get to help kids that don’t exactly understand the concepts,” Brooke said.
On Monday, Brooke helped tutor fifth-grade student Zackery Shreves, 11, his vocabulary words. Brooke flipped through notecards of words, keeping them hidden from Zackery.
“She’s teaching me how to spell,” Zackery said.
For more information on the tutoring program, see the Saturday, Oct. 19 edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News.
