Standoff at Western Inn Suites

February 27, 2013

Wapakoneta Daily News breaking news

Officers with the Wapakoneta Police Department and members of the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) took two men into custody at approximately 6:30 p.m. after a nearly 3 1/2 hour standoff in Wapakoneta.

Officers surrounded the Western Inn Suites at 3:05 p.m. after the department was notified of two men wanted on a warrant out of Logan County were staying at the Wapakoneta motel. The SRT responded when the two men — one wanted on a charge of burglary and the second on a charge of domestic violence — indicated they would not surrender peacefully, Police Chief Russ Hunlock said.

Negotiators were able to talk the men out of the motel room and they surrendered without incident. They were transported to the Auglaize County Jail.

Hunlock said the case would be forwarded to prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possible charges here.

The men would be transported to Logan County, where the initial criminal charges were filed.

Wapakoneta EMS responded to the scene as a precaution.

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon also responded to the scene.

It was an intense situation but the Detectives from the Logan County Sheriff's Office, Wapakoneta Swat Team , Negotiators and Officers did a tremendous job in keeping our guests and staff safe as they negotiated with the suspects and succeeded in getting the suspects to surrender quietly,
