'Skins prepare for 'Dogs

September 21, 2012

Following last week’s 24-21 loss to the Celina Bulldogs, Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football head coach Doug Frye and his squad are looking to bounce back this week in a home game against the Defiance Bulldogs.

Frye said the Defiance program is strong, and the team is led by long-time veteran Jerry Buti.

“Jerry (Buti) is an exceptional coach, his team plays with great spirit and great toughness,” Fyre said. “We expect to have our hands full Friday night.”

Last week, Defiance (1-3, 1-2 WBL) struggled in a game against Ottawa-Glandorf, where their defense let up 70 points.

“Last week they didn’t have a very good outing,” Frye said, “and traditionally when they don’t, Gary gets them playing real hard the next week.”

Frye said the history at Defiance is rich, and that is always somethingof which to be wary

“It’s a team I have great respect for, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity,” Frye said. “But we know we’re going to have our hands full.”

Offensively, Frye said their attack mimics the Wapakoneta attack.

“They are similar to us in regards that they are going to jump into a shotgun set and throw the ball around,” Frye said. “He’s got a veteran quarterback, some veteran receivers, and they are pretty big up front.”

But like the bread and butter of the Redskins, the Bulldogs will pound the ball down the throat of defenses.

“They are going to pack it back in and run the ball at you,” Frye said. “From the defensive standpoint they present a variety of schemes we need to plan for.”

Frye said defensively they have packages and schemes designed to drive offenses mad, and he needs to plan for anything.

“Coach Buti calls the defense, and he’s a veteran,” Frye said. ““They are a blitzing upfield defense and they try to create havoc for offenses.”

Frye said this is a solid WBL team that has been on the bad side of luck as of late.

“They won a state championship (in 1997) and they are still a force in the WBL, they play with intensity, they just haven’t  had some breaks go their way,” Frye said.

Last year the Bulldogs won only one game on the season, and Frye said they are a much better squad this year.

“I think they are a better football team than they were a year ago,” Frye said.

Game time is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Harmon field.
