The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity softball team hosted the Fort Loramie Redskins Thursday afternoon, in a game that turned out to be a defensive struggle featuring solid pitchers from both sides.
Wapakoneta defeated the Fort Loramie Redskins, 2-0, behind the arms of Carli Sammons and Renee Lovett.
“Carli started us off, she did a nice job with location,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Bill Sammons said. “Hit her spots well. Kept them to zero runs. “
Carli Sammons pitched the first five innings, giving up only three hits to the visiting Redskins.
Lovett came in to get some work before the game today at Defiance.
“It was nice to get her a couple of innings,” Bill Sammons said. “She looked good and had command of her pitches.”
Lovett pitched two innings and struck out four batters.
“We wanted to make sure we didn’t throw her a lot today,” Sammons said. “Because of my competitive edge, I may have kept her in a little longer than I normally would.”
The Redskins didn’t need much offense in the 2-0 victory over Fort Loramie, but Sammons said it was all about timely hitting.
“In a game like this it was 2-0, but it was back-to-back hits that got those runs across,” Sammons said. “Timely hits was a big thing with today’s game.”
Carli Sammons went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI on the day. She also scored a run.
Maddi Stiles, who was called up from JV, scored a run on a wild pitch.
“That was a good team, that was a team that is going to compete for their league title, they will go deep in the playoffs too. It was nice to see our girls rise to the occasion,” Sammons said.
Kati Sawmiller ripped a double in the late innings as she went 1-for-2.
Kristi Bailey went 1-for-2 with a triple on the day.
“She’s really seeing the ball well lately,” Sammons said.
Sammons said part of the thought with pitching Carli Sammons was to get some more balls in play than they would see with Lovett on the mound.
“Defensively I thought we did OK, we only had two errors,” Sammons said. “We wanted to pitch Carli so we could get some defensive looks. Some ground balls, some flyballs. A really nice day.”
The Redskins now prepare for league play against the Defiance Bulldogs this afternoon, at Defiance.
“We’re really looking forward to playing in some competitive league play,” Sammons said. “They have a really strong pitcher, and we are really looking forward to the challenge.”
Tonight’s game starts at 5 p.m. in Defiance. Renee Lovett will be the starting pitcher for Wapakoneta.View more articles in:
