Charlie Sutton set another school record Saturday as part of a sectional championship win for the Wapakoneta Redskins.
Sutton swam the 100-yard freestyle race in 49.12 seconds Saturday, breaking the previous mark of 49.26 set by Ryan Kremer.
The record was the third different school record Sutton has broken this season, previously setting a new mark in the 200 and 500 freestyle races. He also broke the Western Buckeye League meet record in the 100 free on Jan. 29.
“Charlie is swimming well toward the end of the season,” Wapak coach Mark Law said. “It’s a goal of his to compete at state as an individual.”
The Redskins were first among 12 Division II schools at a boys Northwest District sectional meet Saturday at the Lima YMCA. Lima Senior, a Division I school, also competed there.
Wapakoneta scored 349 points in Saturday’s meet. Runner-up Shawnee had 288 points.
In order to qualify for the district meet as an individual, swimmers’ times had to rank in the top 30 out of all individuals among the five different sectional meets within the Northwest District, while relay teams had to place in the top 20 in the entire district.
“Some first-year seniors and other guys will be swimming at districts for the first time, so that’s nice,” Law said.
The following are district qualifiers for the Redskins and how they fared at sectionals Saturday. Their rank in the entire district is specified in parentheses.
Along with Sutton’s district appearance in the 100 free (2nd), he also qualified in the 50 free, as Sutton (3rd; 22.37) was runner-up Saturday by just one tenth of a second.
Hayden Metzger, like Sutton, was a sectional champion in two events, the 200 individual medley (20th; 2 minutes, 19.47 seconds) and the 500 free (17th; 5:29.47).
The Redskins’ Wesley Ruedebusch was the Lima sectional champion in 200 free with a time of 1:59.33 (19th). Ruedebusch (10th; 1:07.67) also placed second in the 100 breaststroke.
Ryan Schneider (17th; 1:00.47) won the 100 butterfly Saturday.
The Redskins’ quartet of Michael Zwez, Metzger, Schneider and Sutton was second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.20 (11th).
Kaleb Miller, Metzger, Ruedebusch and Sutton (5th; 3:31.68) took second in the 400 free relay.
Miller, Ruedebusch, Nick Steinke and Sam Harrod (14th; 1:37.65) were third in the 200 free relay.
Zwez (15th; 1:01.68) and Schneider (15th; 1:02.82) finished 3-4 in the 100 backstroke.
Wapak’s lone diver, Lucas Shade, will move onto districts.
Shade was one of two divers who competed Friday at Ayersville among others on teams which participated in the Lima sectional. Shade, who was one of 23 divers in sectionals, automatically qualified to districts since as many as 30 could advance.
The Northwest District meet will be held Friday at Cleveland State University.View more articles in:
