Redskins squeek by Celina in tune-up game

May 10, 2013

CELINA — With league play finished and the sectional tournament on the horizon, the Wapakoneta Redskins scheduled an extra game against the Celina Bulldogs Thursday to keep the team loose before playoffs begin.

Wapakoneta starting pitcher Johnny Crawford, who went 5-plus innings and allowed only two earned runs in the sixth inning, picked up the victory for the Redskins, 4-2.

Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Brandt said this game was an opportunity for the Redskins to swing the bats and stay loose.

“It was a good game for us, it played out well that we were able to get Johnny some innings,” Brandt said. “We had a pitch-count on him where we wanted him.”

Brandt said even though it was a tune-up game, it’s always nice to get a win.

“Nice to come in and get a win against a quality opponent,” Brandt said.

Crawford gave up five hits on the day, two of them coming on hard hit balls in the sixth inning. At that point, Brandt went to the bullpen for Marshall Gerlach.

“We would have liked to see him get through that sixth inning, but Marshall (Gerlach) did his job and cleaned it up,” Brandt said.

Gerlach finished out the game for the Redskins, allowing only one hit in his two innings of work.

Crawford said the game was a good chance to get out on the diamond before the sectional tournament.

“It was nice to get some innings,” Crawford said. “It was kind of like a pick-up game today, and I hadn’t pitched for over a week, so it was good to get some innings and get some work today.”

Both teams were hitting the ball well Thursday afternoon, as the Redskins recorded eight hits in the game, but were only able to score 4.

“You know, we need to work on getting guys across,” Brandt said. “We’ve got the hits, just not as many runs as we’d like.”

The defense was solid for the Redskins as they went error-free in the field.
