January 2, 2013

BRECKSVILLE —  The Wapakoneta high school wrestling team traveled more than 3 hours this past weekend to participate in the 52nd Brecksville Holiday Tournament.

The Brecksville tournament is the longest running holiday tournament in the country in which 45 teams compete over a two-day period.

The Redskins had five wrestlers make it to Day Two of wrestling.

They were seniors  John “JT” Martin, Nate Valentine, Holden Hengstler, AJ Brown and sophmore Colton Brown.

The Redskins brought home a 19th place finish as a team.

Varsity coach Jason Rostorfer said this tournament is a good place to learn about their team compared to the best in the state.

“Brecksville is a good gauge to see where we are at as a team and as a individual basis for each wrestler,” Rostorfer said. “We learned that we have some work to do when we get back home.”

Wrestling started on Friday morning Martin wrestling in the 106-pound class.

Martin won his first match 10-6 over Josh Portillo from Toledo Central Catholic. He advanced in the second round with a win over Max Johnson from Davison, Mich.
