WAYNESFIELD — An Ohio Sprint Speedweek show is always a big draw.
For Waynesfield Raceway Park, tonight’s race is going to be a little bit bigger.
NASCAR Sprint Cup star Kasey Kahne will take on the best of the All-Star Circuit of Champions during the Speedweek race — stop No. 3 in the eight-race week — tonight at Waynesfield.
Kahne is no stranger to Sprint car racing, having cut his teeth on the dirt tracks of his home state of Washington before competing in the national USAC and World of Outlaws series.
On June 8 he competed in the Prelude to the Dream Dirt Late Model race at Eldora Speedway.
Last week, Kahne tweeted, “Can’t wait! Michigan Sprint cup race and Ohio speedweek all in six nights, now that’s a good time” on his official Twitter account — www.twitter.com/kaseykahne.
Tonight will be his first time at Waynesfield and marks perhaps the biggest name to race at the relatively young track.
This is the 29th year for Ohio Speedweek. The event started Friday at Attica Raceway Park then headed to K.C. Raceway in Chillicothe on Saturday.
Sunday’s race at Millstream Speedway in Findlay was rained out and has been rescheduled for Thursday.
After Waynesfield tonight, the All-Stars head to Fremont Speedway on Tuesday, Sharon Speedway in Hartford on Wednesday, Millstream on Thursday, Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday, and will wrap up with a second trip to Fremont on Saturday.
Kahne is competing in six of the eight races. He finished 20th at Attica and 19th at K.C. before heading to Michigan International Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Sunday, where he finished 28th.
Tim Shaffer leads the Speedweek points after winning the opener at Attica and finishing second at K.C.
Four-time Speedweek champions Dale Blaney overcame a rough opener at Attica, where he finished 24th, to win at K.C.
Kahne will be available to sign autographs at Waynesfield.
Pit gates open at 4 tonight. Grandstand gates open at 5.
Tickets are $22 for ages 16 and up. Ages 11 to 15 are $11. And kids 10 and under are free. Pit passes for all ages are $30.
