DEFIANCE â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins scored twice in the first six minutes and cruised to a 3-1 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer match Monday at Defiance.
Junior Travis Bertram put Wapak on the board at the 4:17 mark. And less than two minutes later, freshman Will Hinegardner made it 2-0.
The Redskins all but sealed the win in the 14th minute as senior Andy Faller scored on an assist from Pablo Arroyo to give Wapak the three-goal lead.
Defiance got within two on a Jordan Tobias goal in the 19th minute. Neither team would score again the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs actually had more than twice as many shots on goal â€” 13-6. But junior goalkeeper Zach Holtzapple withstood the assault with 12 saves.
Wapak is now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the WBL.
Allen East edges W-G
LAFAYETTE â€” The Allen East Mustangs edged the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in five games on Monday.
Allen East won the first two games 25-21 and 25-6 before the Tigers rallied to win the third and fourth 25-22 and 25-22. But the Mustangs pulled out a 15-11 win in the tiebreaker.
For W-G, Bailey Collins had 26 kills. Sydney Buffenbarger recorded 28 assists. And Alyssa Dyer had nine digs and two aces.
The Redskins defeated Bellefontaine 3-1 on Saturday.
LAFAYETTE â€” Jackson Center swept the Trojans in three games by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-17 last Tuesday.
Denise Schwartz had 13 kills for Botkins. Erin George contributed 13 digs.
Trojans edge Anna
Botkins defeated Anna 171-174 on Monday to remain unbeaten at 6-0 in Shelby County League play.
Leading the Trojans were Adam Bornhorst (39), Connor Bornhorst (42), Cory Kies (42), Nick Okuley (48), Nate Cisco (50) and Seth Hanna (56).
Luke Kindelin led Anna with a 39.
