The entire city of Wapakoneta is scheduled to be without power on Sunday for two hours.
Wapakoneta Safety-Service Director Bill Rains said American Electric Power (AEP) officials have informed the city they need to shut down the electric grid to make improvements on their system.
“On Sunday at 2 a.m., AEP is going to knock out power to the city so they can make emergency repairs to a capacitor bank and switches,” Rains told the Wapakoneta Daily News. “We are anticipating this will be only about two hours from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday so AEP can do this emergency repair.
“We also will be involved because we will have to bring our substations back on line in an orderly fashion,” the safety-service director said. “We will have the Wapakoneta Public Works crews out because the traffic signals will not be functioning, and the Wapakoneta Police Department will have extra crews out.”
Rains said AEP is being proactive. If the capacitor bank and switches failed, he said “it could be a catastrophic problem and create more problems than what it is worth.”
In other news, free summer concerts in downtown Wapakoneta are on tap to be back again this summer.
Wapakoneta City Council members voted Monday to permit the seventh annual Party in the Parkway in downtown Wapakoneta starting in late May and ending in early August.
Wapakoneta Councilor-at-large Dan Graf, who also serves as executive director of the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce, submitted a request to use the Heritage Parkway to hold the five concerts this summer.
“This not only benefits the chamber marginally, but it greatly benefits the various service clubs who work the Party in the Parkway,” Graf said on behalf of the chamber’s Performing Arts Committee.
The concerts are to be helps from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on May 25, June 8, June 29, July 13 and Aug. 10. For crews to work, Heritage Parkway will be closed from 5 to 10 p.m.
Councilors cast five votes in favor of the event with two abstentions from 2nd Ward Councilor Dan Lee and Graf. Lee serves on the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Graf serves as the chamber’s executive director.
