People know this man as a crooner.
People know this man as the longest serving Auglaize County elected public official.
People know this man as a historian and a collector.
Today, Vern Doenges is now known as the first-ever recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed Thursday by the Auglaize County Historical Society.
âThis is very gratifying, but the first thought that comes to mind is âWhy me?â â said Doenges, who talked to the Wapakoneta Daily News prior to the dinner and his acceptance of the award in a fashion truly his own by serenading the 125 people attending the Auglaize County Historical Society 50th anniversary banquet. âI can think of other people who are deserving, but I guess the committee made a decision. I am just flabbergasted and there are relatives who have traveled great distances to get here.â
The 91-year-old Wapakoneta resident was surrounded by his four children, including his daughters, Nell, Nina and Noreen, and son, Nick, and grandchildren.
