Man fires shots

October 16, 2012

A Wapakoneta man was arrested Monday following on early Sunday morning shooting incident in the area of Silver and Defiance streets.

Zachary Gonterman, 22, 102 N. Blackhoof St., Apt. 6, fired shots at a moving pickup truck near the intersection of Silver and Defiance streets. The pickup truck, which included a motorist  and a couple passengers who were all in their mid-20s, was hit by the bullets.

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock said he would not speculate on a motive for the shooting at this point in the investigation. He said police officers believe Gonterman was impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Officers responded at 2:47 a.m. Sunday and discovered three casings from a handgun had been fired. Witness testimony collaborated with the findings.

During the investigation, the pickup truck was located and officers learned of the potential suspect.

On Monday, officers arrested Gonterman, who was charged with felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Law enforcement officials searched the Auglaize River Monday in an attempt to find the weapon. Hunlock confirmed a weapon has been found.

Investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, deputies with the Allen County Sheriff’s Office Dive team and firefighters with the Wapakoneta Fire Department assisted with the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
