Lima man dies in I-75 crash

October 18, 2013

Wapakoneta Fire Department firefighters and paramedics work to free Lima resident John Austin from an overturned truck.

A 39-year-old Lima man died from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 75 near the Bellefontaine Street overpass in Wapakoneta.
John R. Austin was driving a dump truck south on I-75, approaching the Bellefontaine Street overpass at 1 p.m. when witnesses said his dump bed started to rise. The dump bed struck the overpass causing the truck to overturn and trap Austin in the cab.
“We talked to a couple different witnesses and he was driving in the right-hand lane and as he approached the bridge the bed of the truck came up and struck the overpass which in turn flipped the truck onto its top,” Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Wapakoneta Post Commander Lt. Scott Carrico told Hometown Stations, a local news media outlet.
For more information on the crash, see the Friday, Oct. 18 edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News.
