Led by McCullough, Botkins rolls over Riverside

December 3, 2012

BOTKINS —  The Botkins Lady Trojans got an easy victory Saturday, 48-17 over Riverside.  The Trojans lead from the start, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead with 2:53 left in the opening quarter.

Botkins started the game with a 13-0 run, before the Pirates scored their first basket with 1:30 left in the first quarter.  The Lady Trojans took an 18-2 lead at the end of first quarter, aided by 10, first quarter points from Claire McCullough.

The Lady Trojans continued their hot start, scoring the first seven points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 24-2.  Botkins held the Lady Pirates to only 6 points in the first half to take a 30-6 lead into halftime.  Claire McCullough tallied 13 points in the first half.

The Lady Pirates struggled to score the entire game, scoring a mere 17 points total.  Botkins extended their lead to as many as 30 in the third quarter, to take a 39-9 lead into the final period of play.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Trojans continued to dominate and extended   their lead to a game high 34 points.  The team’s big lead enabled Head Coach Don Mack to give playing time experience to several of his reserves players during the final three minutes of play.  They ended  with a 48-17 victory.

Senior center, Logan Pitts was held to only 3 points, but Coach Mack was very pleased to get the win without Pitts having played her best game, “It’s nice to get a win without her having her best.  Her foul trouble really concerns me, but it’s nice to see so many kids get in the scorebook.”

Mack was also pleased to see McCullough step up offensively “I was happy to see her get going, she really needed it for her confidence.  We’re going to really need her scoring, as well as Casie’s and Hannah’s scoring.

Mack wasn’t pleased, however, with his team’s  free throw shooting. “We were only 8-21. We really need to work on our foul shooting. You can’t go 8-21 and expect to win many games."

Riverside shot 14 percent from the field, compared to Botkins 38 percent.

Riverside committed 28 turnover, while Botkins turned it over 22 times.

The Lady Trojans out rebounded the Pirates 37-31.

Riverside was 3-11 from the foul line, Botkins was 8-21 from the foul line.

Mcgowen led Riverside with 8 points, while McCullough led Botkins with 17 points.
