Juniors going deep: Both Wapakoneta juniors hit homeruns in victory

April 24, 2013

CELINA —  Both juniors on the Wapakoneta varsity baseball squad hit home runs in their 10-0 rout of the Celina Bulldogs Tuesday.

Chandler Kaeck had a grand slam in the third inning and Chace Culver had a solo shot in the sixth, providing more than enough offense for the Redskins.

Culver helped himself out Tuesday with his homerun, as he was the pitcher for Wapakoneta. He pitched 6.0 innings of 2-hit baseball.

Both hits came in the bottom of the sixth.

“I didn’t really realize I had a no-hitter going until about the fourth or fifth inning,” Culver said. “It didn’t really affect me too much.”

Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Brandt said Culver had his pitches going well Tuesday, with the exception of a couple control issues in the first couple innings.

“The first time through the lineup he had a little bit of problem with his control and finding his spots,” Brandt said. “There were times were he walked guys on four straight pitches and hit a couple batters, but after we got through the first time through the lineup, he was able to cruise pretty well.”

Culver struck out three in the two-hit outing.

“I felt good, obviously my first few innings weren’t the greatest,” Culver said. “I just adjusted my arm slot from a three-quarter to over the top for my 12-6 curve. Started rolling after that.”

The Redskin offense got it going against Celina, scoring 9 runs in the first three innings, and another in the sixth.

“We jumped on them early for a run and just continued to go there in the second and third,” Brandt said. “Another solid day offensively.”

Culver and Kaeck both had home runs, and Kaeck had 5 RBIs on the day.

“I was just seeing the ball well here, and yeah, that was my first home run,” Kaeck said. “Fun that it was on a grand slam, but I didn’t know it was out. I almost caught Johnny ahead of me because I was running so fast.”

Brandt said both juniors had a great game offensively.

“Chandler was seeing the ball really well today, he was on base every time,” Brandt said. “Chace got a home run as well. He’s been swinging the bat well, I know he’s a pitcher, but he’s also been swinging the bat well, and he’s working hard on that aspect of the game.”

Defensively, the Redskins were flawless. Marshall Gerlach had some great plays at the third base corner to help out his pitcher.

“Offense here lately has been awesome, and the defense has been even better,” Culver said.
