James R. Streight, 89

James R. Streight, 89, of Bellefontiane, formerly of Wapakoneta, died Monday morning, Sept. 19, 2011, at his daughter’s home in Bellefontaine.
He was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Wapakoneta, the son of Edna (Koch) and Marcy Streight, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are three sons, Richard (Tina) Streight, of Canton, Kan., Tom Streight, of St. Marys, and Dennis (Jenne) Streight, of St. Marys; a daughter, Sandy Gehrlich, of Bellefontaine; 11 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; two sisters, Annabelle (Bob) Roth, of Troy, and Patty Urich, of Colorado; and a brother, Robert (Carol) Streight, of Whitehouse.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Petey Grabor.
He retired in 1987 after 28 years service with Crown Control in New Bremen. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Boatswain’s Mate, 2/c. His memberships included, a life member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 767 in St. Marys, a life member of the Wapakoneta VFW Post 8445, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 691 in Wapakoneta. He enjoyed NASCAR, football, and vacations with his sisters and brother. Asked about his experiences during World War II, his favorite story to tell was of coming close to being killed by a falling coconut. He loved people and always had a smile for his visitors. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta, with military rites conducted by the Wapakoneta VFW.
Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday and 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
