Herbert L. â€śHerbâ€ť Leugers, 90, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:05 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at St. Ritaâ€™s Medical Center, in Lima.
He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Osgood, the son of Frances (Uhlenhake) and Herman Leugers, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 3, 1956, he married Ruth E. Roby, and she survives.
Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Katie Leugers, of Botkins; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Krites, of Wapakoneta, Dorothy Leugers, of Wapakoneta, and Lois Leugers, of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Norbert, Urban, Aloys â€śPeteâ€ť, Arnold â€śBudâ€ť and Vernon; a sister and brother-in-law, Odelia and Gene Wagner; a sister-in-law, Elsie Leugers; and a brother-in-law, Harold Krites.
Herb had worked at Unisteel in Lima, and retired as janitor at the Wapakoneta VFW He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. Herb was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wapakoneta. He was a life member of the VFW Post 8445, and his other memberships included the American Legion, Post 330, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 691, Amvets Post 333, and the K of C Council 1272, all of Wapakoneta. His hobbies included working in his yard, playing cards, and watching the Cincinnati Reds.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Botkins, with the Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating. Burial is to follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta V.F.W. Post 8445.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta.
