Behind the speed and foot of junior Sara Warner, the Wapakoneta girls soccer team found its first win of the season Thursday night.
Warner had two goals on the day, and accounted for the only scoring in the match.
“I think that we played really well, we really played as a team and I think we really dominated the second half as far as possession and getting goal opportunities,” Warner said after the game.
Warner said she was happy to get the first win of the season and is looking forward to many more.
The 2-0 win was against the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays, and coach Ross Kantner was pleased with the team’s performance.
“The kids played hard, what can I say? They went out played hard. We felt that if we spread the field and play our game, we felt we could play with Delphos,” Kantner said.
Kantner agreed with Warner that the second half was more organized and controlled than the first half.
“The first half was a little ragged, we were just kicking and running,” Kantner said. “I felt like we controlled the second half. It seemed like we were down on their end a whole lot more than they were on our end.”
Kantner was happy with the way Warner and the rest of the team played.
“Sara (Warner) is obviously very quick … Throughout the season I think she’ll be one of the fastest, if not the fastest, girls on the field at any time. She’s very physical, she doesn’t get pushed off the ball,” Kantner said. “If we can work on her touch, she could’ve probably had one or two other goals.”
Warner’s first goal of the game was scored about 10 minutes into the matches, when she stole the ball, then persevered through several defenders, before putting it past the Delphos goalkeeper.
Going into halftime, the score was 1-0.
With Delphos pushing up late in the second half, a turnover gave Wapakoneta the ball in the offensive zone in a favorable position.
Earning a corner kick with one minute left, Warner found a bouncing ball in the box and was able to deflect it into the back of the net for her second goal of the game.
“I’m happy winning 1-0, but winning 2-0 really gives us the confidence that we can score,” Kantner said.View more articles in:
