George McElroy, 88

George Neil McElroy Sr., 88, of Lima, died at 7:44 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Spencerville, to Cecil Danner and Nathan McElroy Sr. On June 21, 1946, he married Neta Jayne Wikel, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 1987. On June 7, 1993, he married Emma Jean Spayd, and she survives in Lima.
Mr. McElroy had been a letter carrier and a farmer. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Eagles Lodge Aerie 370, VFW Post 1275, American Legion Post 96, Ft. Amanda Lodge 706 Free and Accepted Masons, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed golf, playing cards, fishing, traveling and bowling.
Surviving are a son George N. McElroy Jr., of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Spicer, of Lima; a daughter-in-law, Jane McElroy, of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Jane McElroy Staup; and two brothers, Nathan McElroy Jr. and Wayne McElroy.
The family plans to receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home in Cridersville.
Masonic memorial service is at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services are to be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Cridersville, with the Rev. James C. Couser officiating. Burial is to follow in St. Matthew Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1275.
