W-G picked up its first win on the season with a 24-6 victory over the Troy Chriistian Eagles on Friday night in Troy.
The Tigersâ defense stepped up and made big plays to create offensive opportunities.
W-G shut out the Eagles in the first three quarters and held a 24-0 lead late into the fourth quarter until Troy Christian finally got on the board with 3:57 left in the game.
âWe played hard tonight but we still have a lot to work on,â W-G coach Gary Spencer said. âWe are still struggling to put four quarters together and play a whole game and thatâs the only way we can beat Fairbanks next week.â
The Tigers took advantage of critical penalties by the Eagles, extending drives and leading to scores.
W-G also had big stops on fourth downs, coming up with sacks and tackles for loss to force turnovers on downs.
Tigers junior quarterback Garret Miller passed for two touchdowns on the night. He connected with Eli OâLeary for a 20-yard reception and Evan Humes for a 40-yarder to make it 18-0.
Gabe Hennon scored on the ground for the other W-G touchdown to give the Tigers a 24-0 lead going into the half.
W-G was perfect on two-point conversions, going three for three.
Troy Christianâs Tyler Shinall ended the W-G defenseâs hopes of a shutout with a 49-yard touchdown run.
âThey were more physical than us and they tried harder and thatâs how you win a football game,â Troy Christian coach Caleb Brown said. âSome penalties hurt us and thatâs how you get beat but we had great effort.â
W-G is now 1-2 on the season. Troy Christian is 0-3.
