What ailed the Wapakoneta Redskins in the fourth game Thursday stuck with them in the lopsided fifth game as they allowed a 2-1 match lead to turn into a 3-2 defeat to the Elida Bulldogs in Western Buckeye League varsity volleyball action in Elida.
Thursday’s scores were 25-22, 18-25, 13-25, 25-19 and 15-2.
“The loss in the fourth game set the tone for the fifth set,” Wapak varsity coach Amy Ruppert said. “Elida has a couple nice servers and we got hung up in serve-receive making error after error after error.
“The pressure was on us, and the momentum was with Elida,” she said. “Simply, our serve-receive wasn’t getting the ball to the setters, and that started in the fourth game.”
Sarah Horman paced Wapak in serving with 15 points and three aces. Josie Miller was tops in kills for Wapak with 10. Lea Stoner and Miller combined for 25 blocks. Jadyn Nuss posted 20 digs for the Redskins.
Wapak is now 6-3 overall, and, with Thursday’s loss, its first in league play, is 1-1 in the WBL.
The Redskins will host the Parkway Panthers for their next match Tuesday.
