Culver goes the distance as Wapak edges Bath

April 30, 2013

The Wapakoneta varsity baseball team edged out Bath in a Western Buckeye League match up, thanks in part to solid pitching from a junior that went the distance Monday.

Chace Culver pitched 7.0 innings, giving up 2 runs, 5 hits and 3 walks, and picking up the victory over the Bath Wildcats, 3-2.

“We had some great pitching from Chace,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Brandt said. “He didn’t have his best stuff by any means, but he battled. “

The Redskins’ bats weren’t as lively as Brandt would have liked them to be, but that can be credited to some solid pitching from Bath’s Collin Gossling.

Gossling went 6.0 innings, and other than a 2-run double from Alex Koch and a manufactured run in the 5th inning, tamed the Redskin offense.

“When you’ve got two guys throwing they way they were throwing it, you’ve just got to find a way to manufacture a run or two, and we weren’t able to,” Bath varsity coach Brian Jesko said.

Koch’s double in the second inning score A.J. Etzkorn and Marchall Gerlach.

A single in the fifth from Gerlach, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and an infield hit by Josh Apple scored a run for the Redskins in the sixth inning.

Brandt expressed the importance of getting the first guy on in the inning.

“Getting the lead-off batter on in any inning is key, and we had gone a week without getting a leadoff runner on base.,” Brandt said. “We have to be better at that. When you get the leadoff batter on, there are so many things you can do.”

In the end, Bath wasn’t able to produce a third run to tie the game in the 7th.

“Two good teams battling in a classic WBL game,” Jesko said. “We had limited opportunities on the base path, and we didn’t make anything of those opportunities, and ultimately that’s what cost us the game.”

The Redskins prepare today for a game against Ottawa-Glandorf, at home. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
