County jobless rate drops

January 31, 2014

ST. MARYS — Auglaize County’s unemployment rate in December dropped a half a percent from the previous month — following the trend for the rest of the region.

In data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the county recorded an unemployment rate of 4.6 percent in December, down from the 5.1 percent it saw in November. The year-end rate was 0.2 percent less than the 4.8 percent Auglaize County recorded to end 2012.

Executive Director of Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council, Greg Myers said employers in Wapakoneta seem to be doing very well, and most have positions that need to be filled and are expanding.

“My assumption for why ours would be lower than other surrounding counties might be the diversity we have,” Myers said. “Our manufacturing base has a strong automotive component, but it’s not just automotive.”
