County Democrats meet primary ballot candidates

Auglaize County Democrats welcomed special guests at their monthly meeting Thursday night.

They played host to a meet and greet for local candidates who will be on the primary ballot May 8. There are two noticeable trends for the party this year — youth and new ideas.

Two of the youngest candidates are still teenagers but all have the same goal in giving the local communities an unbiased voice in Columbus.

Aiden Baker is a 17-year old from Paulding who is running for the 82nd House district. His opponent in the general election will be incumbent Rep. Craig Riedel. "I'm a huge union supporter," Baker said.

"My opponent is very anit-union but those people are very vocal about protecting their way of life."

Baker, who will turn 18 in one week, said he originally had intended on running for the governor's seat that will be vacated by a term-limited John Kasich.

"I heard you can run for governor at 18, but that dream got stepped on pretty quickly," Baker said. "A friend recommended I check out the state legislature so I did that and I thought 'Ok so I won't be governor but I can handle this.'"
