After a see-saw first game, the Wapakoneta Redskins could not topple the Bellefontaine Chieftains on Tuesday in varsity volleyball action in the season opener at home.

The two teams battled throughout the first game until the Chieftains put it away 25-21. The second game followed the first until Bellefontaine took control and pulled away with a 25-17 win. They then dominated the third game, 25-14, to sweep the match 3-0 in Redskins varsity volleyball coach Amy Ruppert’s first game directing the program.

The Wapak offense struggled to click most of the match, which made it more difficult to mount any rallies to challenge the Chieftains.

"The disappointment for me is we are running a 6-2 which means our setter is coming from the back row, which is supposed to give us three hitting options in the front row, however I didn’t get any middle production out of our middle hitters,” Ruppert said. “I had two kills out of the middle all night so our 6-2 is really struggling.

“I would like to think that is the good old case of the nerves,” she said.

Senior Erin Schnell and junior Josie Miller led the Redskins with four kills apiece, while senior Lyndsi Whitmore, junior Sarah Horman and sophomore Addy Gray each had two kills.

“I felt like Josie had a good game,” Ruppert said. “She had a total of four kills but we have some plays and while the play is not always coming to her she was playing solid and right where she needed to be.”

Bellefontaine varsity volleyball coach Tara Zedeker said she liked her squad’s progression through the games.

“Dominating the court is something we actually have been working for toward the preseason having the confidence we need because we have the talent so now we just have to pull it together as a team,” Zedeker said. “This was our first game, first day of school so I think we were up against some nerves at first, but I knew we could do it. I guess the important thing is they did, they accomplished what they wanted and they just took it from there. They really started to build on that and that is all a coach can ask for.”

Despite the opening loss, Ruppert picked up some areas of strength.

“I think some of the positives are service was pretty strong and we are an aggressive serving team,” Ruppert said, mentioning the play of sophomore libero Jadyn Nuss. “We run a running float serve which is hard for the defense to pick up on and because of the way we serve I expect some of the balls to go long on us.”

The junior varsity Wapakoneta Redskins won in exciting fashion by scoring the last four points in the third game to win 26-24 and win the match 2-1 over Bellefontaine.
