October 13, 2011

The Botkins boys’ varsity team, at top, played Tuesday’s last home game in honor of former school district employee Becky Grillot, who lost a year-long battle with cancer on Oct. 5. The team wore pink shirts in remembrance.

BOTKINS — During a home sporting event just short of a year ago, the Botkins community rallied around Becky Grillot to aid her in her battle with cancer.
On Tuesday, the community again rallied behind her one more time.
In honor of Grillot’s succumbing to the disease Oct. 5, the Botkins boy’s soccer team completely trampled Fairlawn, 9-0, in a game the team played in her memory.
Grillot served as a librarian and secretary at for the school district.
“She was one of the most loving people ever known,” said daughter Amy Grillot, who survives at home with her sisters, Jodi and Vicki, and their father, Andrew. “There was never one thing in life that she complained about, even when she was sick. She never gave up and fought to the very end. There was not one person in the school that she did not speak highly of.”
Parent Nikki Butcher, who’s son, Dakota Butcher, helped originate the idea of playing the game in the pink jerseys, said she was proud of the team coming up with the idea to play the game to posthumously honor Grillot.
The game also was the final home game of the season and senior day for the team’s seniors.
“It was such a nice thing for the kids to think of,” Butcher said.
Butcher and teammate Andy Egbert came up with the idea for the pink jerseys.
Grillot, who was a 1982 graduate of Jackson Center High School and studied business administration at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, was remembered for her love of reading and taking photographs.
She loved camping and the occasional chocolate. Attendees at the game agreed that she will be most remembered for her smile.
